1980’s Bronze Sculpture “Man with Face in his Chest” by Bing Dawe. This piece is from Bing Dawe’s Reintroducing the Fabulous Races Series, which in part was inspired by the fabulous peoples imagined by medieval Europe, irregular and exotic people thought to exist at the edges of the world. These Grotesques were a popular Element within medieval travelers tales and even featured in the borders of various books as detailed illustrations.
Bing Dawe was born in Glenavy, near Oamaru, in 1952. He received a Diploma of Fine Arts from the University of Canterbury in 1976. He has since completed many public commissions & his work has been exhibited throughout New Zealand.
